BUSINESS
Working Green
Organizations across Newfoundland and Labrador are discovering that going green is good for business. Reducing waste in the workplace isn’t just good for the environment; it’s good for the bottom line, employee morale and corporate public relations. Reducing waste at work can help lower operating costs while increasing operational productivity. And from a consumer’s perspective, eco-friendly products and services are often more appealing and stand out from the competition. Many people have already made lifestyle changes at home that benefit the environment but we now need to turn our attention to reducing waste at work. According to Statistics Canada, in 2008 over 190 thousand tonnes of waste were produced from non-residential sources. Since 60% percent of our province’s waste comes from non-residential sources (industrial, commercial and institutional waste) businesses must be engaged in better waste management practices.
Businesses and organizations play a key role in protecting our environment and help ensure a cleaner and more sustainable future by making small, simple changes to the way we conduct our daily business. Whether you are front-line staff, management, an administrative assistant, tradesperson or labourer – we can all play a part in helping reduce waste on the job.
