PARTNERSHIPS

Community Partnerships

MMSB is dedicated to supporting environmental initiatives in the community. We work with community groups and other organizations to help people reduce waste and educate residents about the environment. Some of the groups MMSB has partnered with are highlighted below.

Featured Partnerships:

MMSB & 2010 Ruckus on the Edge

When it came hosting the 2010 Juno Awards, the Ruckus on the Edge committee wanted to put their greenest foot forward. They teamed up with MMSB to make sure Juno Week tread lightly on the earth. A green committee was struck - including a member of MMSB's public education team - and the work to green the Junos began. Through the hard work of the green committee and sponsorship support from the MMSB, Juno Week boasted the following environmental achievements:

  • 3500 pounds of organic waste was kept out of the landfill when 12 restaurants jumped on board to compost during Juno Week.
  • Printed material in delegate packages was reduced; reusable water bottles were provided to delegates to reuse throughout the week; paper and beverage containers were recycled at all venues.
  • CHMR's Green Radio was broadcast live during Juno Week from 12-8 pm daily - using pedal-power from energetic bike volunteers.

MMSB and MUN Division of Lifelong Learning

MMSB and MUN's Division of Lifelong Learning have developed an exciting new partnership.

Kids @ MUN Enviro-Kids Summer Camp

MMSB public education staff developed and delivered environment themed day camps for children aged 5-7 through the Kids @ MUN summer camp program. Throughout this specialized summer camp, "Enviro Kids" were led on an exploration of the 3R's and composting through nature walks, imaginative play, crafts, and hands on activities.
Lifelong Learning Personal Enrichment Class

MMSB public education staff developed and delivered a 90-minute composting workshop for adults interested in learning more about backyard composting. Participants were given an overview of the problem of waste in Newfoundland and Labrador and then led through the steps of how to compost at home from setting up your bin to using your finished composting.

MMSB &
MUN Botanical Garden

MMSB and the MUN Botanical Garden have been long-time partners and friends - getting together on a regular basis to deliver programs and education on composting and other waste reduction activities.

Our most significant partnerships have been though the work we do together each year in May for Compost Awareness Week and throughout the summer when MMSB's public education staff delivered our 3R Hike to children enrolled in MUN Botanical Garden's Junior Naturalists day camp program.
