Regional Authorities

A Regional Waste Management Authority (RWMA) is responsible for designating, financing, and operating regional waste management systems across Newfoundland and Labrador. A RWMA is established as a legal, incorporated entity operated by a board of directors with representation from the municipalities, Local Service Districts and unincorporated communities in the waste management region.

2. Regional Waste Management Studies
   RWMCs can apply for funding to develop regional waste management plans/studies in support of the Newfoundland & Labrador Waste Management Strategy.

3. Regional Education and Awareness Projects
   RWMCs can apply for funding to assist in the implementation of the Provincial Waste Management Strategy through regional workshops, educational and promotional activities, and professional development for the regional coordinator.

4. Regional Capacity Building Programs
   RWMS/RWMAs are eligible for multi-year funding to assist them in acquiring dedicated resources at an appropriate (effective) level to support their formative planning and organizational development needs as a means of advancing the implementation of the Provincial Waste Management Strategy at the regional level. This program replaces and enhances the former Regional Waste Management Coordinators Program and the former Regional Education and Awareness Program.

5. Demonstration/Pilot Projects
   Regional waste management committees may submit written proposals for demonstration/pilot projects for new technology or innovative waste management programs. Projects must ultimately help the region (versus a specific business/municipality) toward achieving the goals of the Provincial Waste Management Strategy.
